One of the biggest treasures of this museum is the big collection concerning the South Seas that could not have been visited for years. The earliest parts came from Polynesia and some of these rare objects date way back to the times of Captain Cook, which means the time when the inhabitants of the islands didn't have contact with the Europeans yet. The most comprehensive of these collections descend from the colonial time of the German Empire in Melanesia and have been collected between 1884 and 1914.
